What is the Property Tax Arrears Program?

The Property Tax Arrears Program is designed to assist residents who have property tax or residential lease arrears.

What are the benefits of this program?

The Property Tax Arrears Program can provide up to 100% interest assistance for property taxes that are more than 24 months in arrears. For more information, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions.

Who is eligible for this program?

The Program is open to all residents of the General Taxation Area (GTA) who have property tax or residential lease arrears in excess of 24 months.

Residents of Municipal Taxation Authorities (Yellowknife, Inuvik, Norman Wells, Fort Simpson, Hay River, and Fort Smith) are not eligible for property tax interest assistance but may qualify for interest assistance on residential leases.

How does this program work?

Qualifying residents may receive up to 100% interest assistance on their property tax provided that they enter into a repayment agreement with the GNWT for the full principal on the account. For further information, please refer to the Property Tax Arrears Program Guidelines.

How do I apply for this program?

The Department of Finance began accepting applications for the Property Tax Arrears Program on August 1, 2019. You can apply by completing the Application Form.

  • All applications from Seniors and Disabled Persons must be signed and dated in front of a Commissioner for Oaths
