Search Usernames and passwords in the GNWT
Your GNWT ID Account
Your GNWT ID account, sometimes called your ‘corp’ account, identifies you on the GNWT's network and is the ‘universal’ login account for accessing most GNWT systems and services.
GNWT ID account usernames are usually your Firstname_Lastname (first name + underscore + last name), for example, Jane Doe’s username would be Jane_Doe.
If you started with the GNWT before 2006 or have a name that is over 20 characters, your username may use a different format of FirstinitialLastname (first letter of first name + last name), or a variation of this, for example, Jane Doe’s username would be JDoe.
Examples of systems and services you access with your GNWT ID account username and password are:
- DIIMS
- Bear Net
- TSC-supported computers
- BlackBerry’s Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) on your mobile device
- GNWT Network
- GNWT Wireless Network available in GNWT boardrooms
This account is provided by the TSC.
Your SAM/HRIS user ID
Your SAM/HRIS user ID and password allow you to sign into the GNWT’s Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and System for Accountability and Management (SAM) system at samhris.gov.nt.ca.
SAM/HRIS User ID usernames are usually your firstname.lastname (first name + period + last name), for example Jane Doe’s username would be jane.doe. e.

Passwords
Password Best Practices
Choosing hard-to-hack passwords and managing them securely can sometimes seem inconvenient. Here are two ways to make your passwords as secure as possible. Doing so can keep hackers from taking over your accounts, and prevent theft of the GNWT’s information.
Resetting GNWT laptop/tablet password when in a GNWT office/building
If you are still going into work, you will continue to be prompted when your password is close to expiring.
Changing your GNWT account password on your GNWT laptop/tablet using VPN
You will not receive notification when your password is about to expire when using VPN to connect to the GNWT network. If you have VPN access and use a GNWT laptop/tablet you can update your GNWT account password by:
- Connect to VPN.
- Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
- Select Change a password.
- Enter your previous password, create and confirm a new password.
- Lock and unlock your computer to make sure the change takes effect.
Your password should now be updated.
Resetting an expired/forgotten GNWT account password
If you have forgotten your GNWT account password or it has expired, please have your manager/supervisor contact the TSC Service Desk at TSCServiceDesk@gov.nt.ca to have it reset.
You will know when your password has expired if you receive an error message.
Changing your GNWT account password in Outlook for the web
You can change your password at any time whether on a work computer or personal home computer in Outlook on the web at mail.gov.nt.ca. Outlook on the web will prompt you when your password is close to expiring.
Changing this password will update the password that you use for email, DIIMS, Bear Net, and most GNWT systems and services. If you are using a GNWT laptop/tablet and do not have VPN access your computer password will not update. This means that you may still have to log in to your GNWT laptop/tablet with your old password and use your new password to log into Outlook for the web, DIIIMS, MyHR, etc.
- In a web browser, go to mail.gov.nt.ca.
- Sign in to your account.
- Select Settings, then Options.
- In the left-hand column of the page select General, then My account.
- Select the link Change your password.
- Follow the instructions on the Change password page.
- Select Save.
Change your SAM/HRIS user ID password
The SAM/HRIS system will prompt you when your password is close to expiring. This password can be updated at any time whether you are in your office or working from home and you don’t need to be connected to VPN.
- In a web browser, go to samhris.gov.nt.ca
- Sign in to your SAM/HRIS account.
- Select the Change My Password tile.
- Follow the instructions on the Change Password page.
- Select Change Password.
