Become an NWT Liquor Inspector

NWT Liquor Inspectors are located in Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells and Inuvik. 

What are the requirements to become a Casual Contract Liquor Inspector?

Previous enforcement experience is an asset. Experienced in one or more of the following enforcement fields, combined with the ability to interpret acts and regulations such as Police, Renewable Resources, By-law, Corrections, Court Services, Safety Officers and Transportation Officers.  A satisfactory criminal record check is required.  

You must:

  • Be 19 years of age or older
  • Not be working as an employee of a Liquor Licence Holder
  • Not be involved as an agent of a Liquor Distributor
  • Be a resident of the community (minimum of 6 months)
  • Agree to work late nights especially on weekends and for Special Occasion events when they occur (25% of which is between 0100 – 0230)
  • Agree to work at other times that may be required
  • Not have personal conflicts with Licence Holders within their region
  • Have your own transportation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to understand, interpret and summarize legal statues and regulations
  • Must be familiar with the court process, and be willing to provide evidence
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills (to liaise with stakeholders, sometimes in difficult circumstances)
  • Must be eligible and appointed as an Inspector, in accordance with the Liquor Act.
  • Able to work alone, sometimes in high risk environments and occasionally encounter individuals who are abrasive and at times intoxicated and may become uncooperative and hostile
  • Must be able to make immediate decisions on how to best handle situations
  • Liquor Inspectors are occasionally subject to public or political scrutiny

Responsibilities

  • Inspectors inspect licence premises, liquor stores, premises where functions, and other such places where authorized.
  • Complete inspection reports and discuss them with the licence holder or person in charge of the premises
  • Listen to premises staff, discuss any findings with the Licence Holder or Supervisor.  
  • Observe, record, and report offences found with regards to the Liquor Act and Regulations, Fire Prevention Act and Public Heath Act. 
  • File reports as soon as practical with the Manager, Liquor Enforcement on any suspension of a licence ordered by him/her
  • Serve Notice of Hearings, subpoena’s, and swear affidavits of service
  • May be required to testify as Compliance Hearings when the Inspector has written the Inspection Report or has witnessed the violation
  • May be required to perform other inspections as requested by the Manager, Liquor Enforcement

I have submitted my resume, how does the application process work?

When there is an opening in your preferred community, your resume will be considered as per the GNWT contract hiring process. 

If you are a successful candidate, you will be appointed by the Minister of Finance as Liquor Inspector and enter into a written contract with NWT Liquor Enforcement on a year-to-year basis.  The candidate will be trained in the appropriate legislation, how to conduct inspections and all the administrative aspects of the position
