Overview

The Evacuation Travel Support Program provides funding for NWT residents who, by order, evacuated their home community by vehicle because of the 2023 wildfires.

Information about other financial supports for residents is available on the GNWT’s Public Safety website.

If you have questions or require further guidance, please refer to the Evacuation Travel Assistance Program: Questions and Answers page.

Available funding

  • $750 per vehicle evacuated to a southern jurisdiction; or
  • $400 per vehicle evacuated within the NWT.

Evacuees who left by road but need to return by air will be eligible to register for organized re-entry flights paid for by the GNWT. Details on how to register will come as re-entry planning progresses.

Eligible individuals will be provided with the one-time payment in one of the following forms:

  • Direct deposit for individuals with electronic banking capability; or
  • Cheque.

Eligibility

The NWT Evacuation Travel Support program is available to all NWT residents who:

  • were subject to an evacuation order;
  • evacuated by vehicle; and
  • have not received any other financial support intended to offset evacuation travel expenses from their employer, insurance company or any other source.

Funding through this program is available by vehicle, not per resident.
