NWT Insurance Licence

The Office of the Superintendent of Insurance (OSI) supervises and regulates the business of insurance in the Northwest Territories and enforces the NWT Insurance Act and Regulations. This includes both life and health, and property and casualty insurance in the Northwest Territories.  

How do I know if I need an NWT insurance licence?

Any person who carries on the business of an Insurance Company, Agent, Adjuster, or Salesperson in the Northwest Territories must have a valid licence issued under the Insurance Act, regardless of whether that person is a NWT resident.  

Every insurer (Insurance Company) carrying on business in the NWT requires a licence.

This applies to all insurance business, whether it is done in person, in writing, over the telephone or online.

How do I apply for my insurance licence?

Application and renewal forms for individuals or Insurance Companies must be completed in full, and returned with the application/renewal fee to:

When do NWT Insurance licences expire?

Insurance Companies are licenced on an annual basis by June 30th each year.

Licences for Individuals expire two years from the date of issuance.

It is the licenced individual’s or the Insurance Company’s responsibility to manage their licence renewal process prior to the expiry of their existing licence.

What is the process for paying by EFT?
