Mandate
The Minister and the Department of Finance have the mandate for obtaining, managing and controlling the financial resources required to implement the Government of the Northwest Territories' policies and programs. This mandate includes, negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. The Minister and Department are also mandated with regulating the insurance industry and controlling the sale of alcohol products in the Northwest Territories.Programs and Services

Minister releases Department of Finance Strategic Action PlanYELLOWKNIFE (October 28, 2009) — On October 28, 2009 Minister of Finance J. Michael Miltenberger released the Department of Finance's Strategic Action Plan. This strategic planning document will provide multi-year direction for the Department of Finance. Progress against its objectives will be monitored and reported back to the Legislative Assembly. Public awareness, involvement, participation and feedback are critical factors in ensuring that the Department of Finance continues to operate in a transparent, accountable fashion.
Minister Miltenberger encouraged the Members of the Legislative Assembly and all residents of the NWT to read the Strategic Action Plan and to work closely with the staff of the Department of Finance to assist in develop and articulate the financial and strategic priorities of this government.
